Heater control ****

I did... 5 times. Finally after 3 weeks they listened to me when I said it had a vacuum leak. A hose that was running to the damper door behind the glove box was kinked. They replaced it an now the heat is on. Thanks

I have the same exact problem. When I turn the temp control **** to the right all the way (in the red), the air blows cold. The AC and all the vent positions work on my 97 Ranger XLT, but can't get hot air. I dropped the glove box and checked the vacuum hoses to the door, all were ok. I observed the door opening and closing. Not sure what to do next except take it to the Ford repair shop.

My problem was with the vacuum line that ran to that motor behind the glove box. While the truck is running, turn on the heat and turn that control **** all the was to the right. Open the glove box and remove that line from the motor. The door that it controls should slam shut. If it is already closed then the line/motor is fine. You may not be getting water into the heater box. I would then take it in for service.

The air blend door is controled by an electric accuator. The valve in the heater hose is controled by vacuum. First see if both hose are hot going into the firewall. If they are look on top of the plenum for the accuator and see if it's working when you more the temperature control. If it works then I would think the blend door is broken, you can not see the air blend door. A commom problem and a real PIA to fix, you have to remove the whole dash. If the hoses are not hot check for a vacuum problem to the valve.

I hear what you're saying... my 97 Ranger has a problem with the control **** too... I have heat ALWAYS ON which is a real pain. Since they introduced this electric motor for the main heat door I don't believe there is any vacuum issues I have to look into. Haven't fixed it yet as it is really hard.. (think they call it the plenum)..

Anyway looks like whatever is between the motor and the door is broken. I called Ford and they said I could get the part between for about 7 something. The electric motor seems to work as I can feel that it is turning from the top... The flap door seems fine too, just doesn't move. So whatever is between must be broken... Besides the fact that when I put my hand through the floor vent to this door and moved it I found no resistance and heard something tiny drop and move around (broken piece of something I'd say)..

Now the problem is getting to it. If you have any tips I'd appreciate it.. I can't affort to pay $500+ and have someone else do it. I worked 4 years in a garage in the early 90s and cars were never such a b@*#&@( to work on...

Yesterday I spent 4 hours removing things to try and get to this piece but I didn't get very far.

My biggest questions are: If this piece is broken, how do I get to it to put a new one in?
Does the dash have to be pulled (completely)? How is this done?

To get to the plenum you have to remove the dash, this will include air bags so I would get a good book since this whole project is very involved. When I did the heater core on my 88 Stang it took about 6 hours.

Are there any books you'd recommend?

What about openning up that whole heater compartment from the other side? Removing the fan and the things around that, would that open a whole to the heater chamber?

I like the Fords manuals best, I always buy them for my vehicles. I think the standard manual at the auto store should cover it, most of the time you can look through them to see if it covers what you need. Also you might try a large library in your area for some good manuals that you can copy.

I don't think you would be able to get to the blend door through the blower motor opening since the blower forces air through the evaporator then down into the part of the plenum were the heater core and blend door is. The blend door covers/uncovers the heater core. To remove the engine compartment part of the plenum would require disconnecting the evaporator, you would need to discharge/charge the ac.

Ok, going to try Chiltons manual. Found that the 2 Hayes ones I have are not nearly detailed enough.

Ugghhh, can't believe it. Such a small thing, such a big problem... Gonna have to buy something good from the old days...
