I have a 2001 2wd powerstroke super duty super crew and after a few alterations it is an awsome truck. anyway, today i told myfather in law i was going shopping for a 2005 6.0 powerstroke 4wd . he warned me against buying that truck because ford has had so many problems with that engine that they are discontinuing it after this model year.i haven't heard this before and i'm very concerned as there isn't an alternative truck i could even consider. does anyone have any feedback?
The only thing I have heard about Ford discontinuing the 6.0L PSD is that they are supposedly comming out with a 7.0L diesel in the 2007 model year. There is plenty of talk on a few forums I visit about the 6.0L PSD problems. Of course for every one who has a lemon, there is another who has one that runs like a top. I guess you take your chances .
At the Louisville Cattle show a few weeks ago , there were plenty of fine running 6.0s ... Fuel economy might not be the best w/o a chip added ... I'm running 14-15 mpg unloaded on my 04 6.0 4x4 crew dually ... still beats out my 78 F150 460 at 7-8 mpg I think the majority of probs were with the 03s ????
My 6.0 has been running fine for nearly 15K miles now. I've got an early 04 and it runs between 10-13 MPG with a trailer, 15-20 MPG without. I hadn't heard about the retirement of the engine, although I have heard it's an interim motor on the way to greater things. One rumor said camless engines are coming in 07. Pumping it up to 7L would certainly put its performance far beyond the others. Then again, my rumors have a real bad track record. I really missed the 4.5L PowerStroke V6 for the F150, anyway.
You see a lot of 6.0 problems on places like here, but then again people don't routinely ask for help unless there is a problem. I'm sure most of them are running fine. Word on the street says the 03s had more problems than 04s did.
Mine was built in Jan 03 (Crewcab 6.0) I had the common issues during the first 3,000 miles (injectors & re-flashes) but since then, the truck has performed beautifully... Over 42,000 miles.
IMO, the best description of the plight of the 6.0 was from a Ford parts guy who said "Ford probably released the engine to the public 3 or 4 months too early". My experience fits that description. I would highly recommend the 6.0 to anyone. In fact, there have been several recent head-to-head comparisons with GM DuraMax and Dodge Cummins 600 in Motor Trend, Truck Trend & Truckin magazines.
The winner: Ford 6.0
My April 04 F250 6.0 runs like a scalded ape. With the Banks 6 Gun it should not be street legal. Gas millage is 17 and getting better, I have 15k miles. Biggest problem is keeping the tires hooked up. I have to turn the power setting to 2 on rainy days.
Mine is an early '03 and runs great and pulls very well. Fuel mileage is 17 to 19 on the highway and 13ish with my kind of intown driving.
Pulling my trailer around the SoCal mountains I get around 9.5 to 10.5 and I don't putt up the hills either. It would be nice to drive it somewhere flat and see what I get.
There are big changes being mandated by the Feds and CARB for emissions reasons and that is probably the biggest single reason for the rumored upcoming engine change. The big rigs are just as affected and Cat, Cummins, and whoever, will likely be using technology purchased from Europe on newer generation motors until the U.S. can catch back up.
Thanks guys, i feel a bit better now. i noticed today that the chevy guys will bag on the 6.0 real fast. i bought a new 2500 silverado last year for work, (my first and last chevy, can;t get past a gas station), so bad news about about the 6.0 psd was quite upsetting.
