Glow plug and valve cover torque specs

A buddy if mine dropped off his 97 powerstroke he wants me to replace the glow plug relay, glow plugs, and valve cover gaskets.

Opened the hood my jaw hit the ground...so much room compared to my old 6.0 I was shocked, looks super easy to work on.

Anyways, does any one off hand have the torque specs for valve cover bolts and glow plugs? I don't want them to leak after I replace them. Thanks!!

Snug and snug.

I dont think i tq'ed the glow plugs. I just gave them a good snug.

I dont crank on the valve cover bolts either. snug them up as well.

Unless your a guy who tends to go overboard and tq specs are your friend, then somebody can help you out on that.

Lol, I hear ya! Just didn't know if they were super sensitive or not.

I never torqued my valve cover bolts and very had a problem on my 6.0.

Any tips or tricks you want to share?

Just break the GP's loose then use a hose to turn them out.
The socket will get stuck on the rocker.

if you take the vacuum box off on the pass side air box, it will be easier to get to the back bolts there.

Just need a swivel and 2 or 3 extensions.

I forgot the socket sizes though. IIRC the Gp's are 10.

Make sure you use Buru/motorcraft zd-11's.
Don't use the autolites and other parts store glow plugs.

The glow plugs I got he bought them from auto zone... No good?

The pass side looks easier then the driverside.

Drivers side is easier.

Pass side rear bolt is the hard one. You'll see when you get there.

Suggest to your friend to re-consider motorcraft zd11's for this GP's and to take the autozone ones back.

If he says "nah".
Inform him that his next glow plug change might require removing the heads.

the ZD-11's can swell as well, but are less likely than any other gps' to swell

When you go to pull the gps and it wont easily come out, stop, take a break and dont force it. You probably dont want to pull any heads.

The specs are 14 ft lbs or 168 in lbs on the glow plugs. Valve covers are 97 in lbs.

Just so you know.

Me too. Except I go Darin tight! lol

Use a 1/4 inch deepwell socket on the gp's and it won't get bound up against the rocker. None of the VC bolts are bad. Socket, swivel and extension gets to any of them

just did my glow-plugs myself and yep - 14 ft lbs is correct. and i found a few of my old ones to be very loose coming out (like not even finger tight), so i wanted to make sure i had them snug good going back in.

and yes, its 10 mm 1/4" drive deep well socket is an absolute requiremnt. a 3/8" drive deep well will not fit into the recessed in which the GPs live. the tubing trick over the GPs once loose is a great idea. even my 10 mm 1/4" deep well got stuck on the rocker arm on a few cylinders. i wound up just grinding an angle on the back end of the socket to make some room.

as for GP brand - thanks to much advice on here, i went with motorcraft ones. my old ones coming out were autolites though, and some were definitely swelled at the tip. all came out without cracking, but there were some tense moments for sure.

Pep Boys was the only local store to carry the motocrafts the day i needed them. Napa might, but it was a Sunday and they were closed. Pep Boys had to gather them up from surrounding stores though. my local one only had 3 in stock and 2 other stores all had less than 8. who changes just 3 glow plugs at a time?

I just turn the GP until its out, shake it out of the 10mm socket until the GP falls a little back down, pull the socket out and then with needle nose pliers pull the GP out.
