i have a 1991 extended cab ranger xlt, with a 3.0. i go to street races every weekend and the truck gets pretty good time, but i want to make it faster. the only modification i made to improve the performance so far is removing the muffler. i did this because in the middle of changing mufflers i ran to the store with no muffler on and i realized that there was a very deep and intimidating tone to the engine that i liked, and there was alot more power. so i left it off. has any one else have any ideas for more power?
Cold air intake, underdrive pulley, electric fan, larger MAF and TB, port and polish intakes, headers, might be able to put a 98+ upper intake on it with the removable TB, phenolic spacers, chip.
Well...not exactly cheap but could put in a different camshaft, rockers, etc. Also a new crank would be good. Bore out the cylinders and put bigger pistons in. Find a good machinest while the engine is apart, and and have the unneeded weight and angles ground off and polished on things like the piston rods, air intake manifold, crank, head, etc. Smoothing out the airflow will definately increase your horsepower and torque. Could have your crank knife edged if you want but from what I hear...that only allows for a higher RPM, not more horsepower or torque (even though you'd think you'd gain some with a higher RPM). There is really a lot of things you could do to gain more power. As many people would say you're limited by the amount of money you can and want to spend, but not limited by lack of parts. But Ken is definately right about the parts he suggested. Hope this helps and goodluck.
