Ranger Hauling Capacity
I have hauled engines in the back of a Ranger several times without any trouble. I always take an old tire without the wheel and lay it over the center of the rear axle. Then, once the engine is resting in the center of the tire, I tie it down with ratchet straps to the corners. I drive very cautiously and do not start quickly or stop quickly. I have seen a panic stop accident, where an engine ended up sliding forward through the back panel, the back window and shoving the driver against the steering wheel. Another incident where the engine slid sideways and back in the box finally falling out in traffic. Older style slick plastic bed liners are dangerous when hauling heavy loads that can slide. The old tire helps keep an engine from starting to slide, helps to keep the engine upright and protects the floor of the bed.
