I've run them both. I love the turbo whistle without the muffler, but I'm running the muffler now because mine is a tad on the obnoxious side for my liking without it.
Is there such a thing as Flowmaster type muffler for these?
No, I'm not a kid, I just don't like the fff, fff, fff after-turbo exhaust sound of the V-8 firing order until the throttle is opened. I do like the turbo whistle though!
I think it would be awesome if someone were to come up with a resonator designed to cut down on the harshness of the exhaust note without muffling the turbo whine. Some sort of a Helmholtz resonator tuned to the 7.3's exhaust note would be great!

I dont much wanna listen to that either, haha.
Resonator, as far as i understand, is different from a muffler.
Just a piece of expanded pipe to help reduce the harshness. while a muffler has baffles in it.
The biggest issue I had with mine is that at cruising speeds it would set up a drone that just resonated through the cab and got old fast. A Helmholtz resonator is a res that is tuned to a specific frequency and eliminates that frequency by bouncing the sound back up the exhaust pipe. I thing anything that has baffles in it is going to kill the "whistle" but a resonator could be used to quiet the tone if it were done right. I'm no acoustic engineer though, so who knows, other than cancelling the drone at a given frequency, maybe there is a better way to accomplish said task.

I just dont like the obnoxious bap bap bap sound sorta deal. it sounds fine idling and driving, but when you get on it, you look like one of those kids with a fart can muffler.
Agreed. And towing makes it even worse. Thus... I am sporting the stock exhaust (sans the cat) and a 3" Downpipe. Ironically, for a while I had a portion of the stock exhaust on the truck (pretty ghetto, it just dumped out under the bed) and it sounded better to me than the big pipe all the way out the side. I think it was a combination of the fact that the smaller pipe tends to smooth out that "bap bap bap" you're referring to and the fact that the sound rattling around under the truck mellowed it out some. Soot, on the other hand, was not so cool with that setup!
