Was wondering if any of you have drilled out the oil passage from the filter pad to the oil pump out to 7/16" ? Was wondering how hard it is or is it something I should take to the machine shop and have done. It says you need a long drill bit and was wondering how long of one you would need. Any input would much be appreciated.
Sorry...had it done by the shop while they were doing all the oiling mods there. I figured it was best to have it done before they did a final clean of the block.
I did all the oil mods bymyself. It took a average sized drill bit. I went with smaller diameter bits and moved up to make sure I did a good job. Be carefual and go slowly to keep the oil passage straight. If you screw up, its the end of your block. I also modifed the main saddles to match the bearings. It all went good, but have it hot tanked AFTER THE OIL MOD IS DONE, tons of metal shavings go everywhere. I made the mistake of doing the oil mod after my block was cleaned. So what I did was blow the metal shavings out with compressed air, I think I got most of it but I know I didnt get all of it.
Its easy to do yourself, I reccomend getting a die grinder for the main saddle mod. The machine shop simply wanted too much I couldnt afford there price so I did it myself.
Thanks for your replies. I think your right start out small and work your way up is the thing to do. Just looking at it and not sure which way the hole went and how much meat there is look kind of scary. Already have crank, pistons and cam in. Going to have to tape off stuff so cuttings won't get into block. Been working on this for a few months. Was a 360 changed to 390. Kind of started out blind but happened on this site wish I would of found it sooner.
I hate to say this, but I think you should pull the crank pistions and cam out, then do the mod. There is a lot more metal shavings that are going to come off then you might think, itll get into your oil passages, crank passages, bearings, jouranals, everytwhere. On startup it will be like rubbing sand paper on all your new parts. It is a TON of metal shavings. At a minium do the mod when the block is stripped then blow it out with compressed air. Plus, you will have to do the main saddle mod with the crank out anyway, no way to get around that. I also had to undo a lot of stuff when I rebuilt mine but I learned the hard way on many things.
Dont risk it man, it may seem worth it now but if it explodes when you start it up, it will ruin your day.
