Code reader

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question but I would like to buy a reasonably priced code reader that reads all nessessary codes on my 2001 3.0 Ranger. Can someone direct me to a good site where they compare different models? Or suggest a suitable model? Or both? Thanks much.

I see an Actron CP135 OBD-II code reader go on sale at Pep Boys and other places all the time for $99 which is a very good value IMO. It's what I have in my box (paid $140 about 2 years ago) and without a doubt it has saved me more time and money than any other tool since I go it. Easy to use, easy to read, does the simple things very well.

There is also another Actron on sale there sometimes for $199 which does a little bit more than the CP135, such as (I think) display "real time" data from some of the OBD-II monitors.

RockyJ: What Rockledge recommends is correct. There are a number of relatively inexpensive code readers on the market from the Actron 9135 to a CReader. Each will provide the Error Code which will in turn point you to the circuit which is the cause for concern. I have seen CReaders on e-bay for as little as $40. From here one needs a good multi-meter and a wiring diagram to further chase the source of the error. The readers will also turn off the CEL light until the error recurs.

If you decide to take the issue a step further, a scanner will provide not only the error code but will allow the user to scan the real-time data from the sensors/relays that support the circuit in question. As an example if one of the sensors is not sending any signal that would be a good place to start - checking the connections and looking to see if the data has been restored.

Personally I purchased a Actron CP9145 and am very pleased with it. This device will work on both OBD1 and OBD2. I needed a different cable for the unit to interface with my 93 with EEC IV. Saves lots and lots of time especially if one has multiple vehicles.

Hope this is helpful and gives you something to think about.

Russ
