Got a question here for you to ponder. I rebuilt a C6 tranny from 73 F100 and have been running it on my 390 for a year. Seems like it has never really been right, even after rebuild, but as you know, it just a keeps on going.
My question is this: After driving highway speed for a constant hour or more, when I pull off the freeway and the tranny shifts down to first on the stop, sounds like the damn thing is going to blow up. Basically, runs fine till I get to the end of the exit ramp and soon as the tranny goes to shift to 1st gear, Bang!! Then after that, as long as I don't get back on the interstate or drive for a long period at constant speed, the bang! never comes back.
I am not a tranny expert, hell not much of a mechanic either, but to me, sounds like pressure is building up in the tranny at highway speed and doesn't release till that first mortar round off the ramp. What the heck is going on?
Thanks for all replies as I am stumped again!

I would check the easiest things first. Sounds like you could have a stuck 2-1 scheduling valve in the control valve assembly. Drain it, take out the valve body and clean it all very well. I've had mine apart a couple of times for sticking valves. If that doesn't work, then check EGR system, vacuum modulator and lines, proper band adjustment and the kickdown (TV cable or rod). Mine did weird stuff and after the second time of draining, changing the filters, yes filters, there's two, one on each side of the valve body, adjusting the intermediate band and cleaning the valve body, she started working fine. Good Luck
