Got a question here for you to ponder. I rebuilt a C6 tranny from 73 F100 and have been running it on my 390 for a year. Seems like it has never really been right, even after rebuild, but as you know, it just a keeps on going.
My question is this: After driving highway speed for a constant hour or more, when I pull off the freeway and the tranny shifts down to first on the stop, sounds like the damn thing is going to blow up. Basically, runs fine till I get to the end of the exit ramp and soon as the tranny goes to shift to 1st gear, Bang!! Then after that, as long as I don't get back on the interstate or drive for a long period at constant speed, the bang! never comes back.
I am not a tranny expert, hell not much of a mechanic either, but to me, sounds like pressure is building up in the tranny at highway speed and doesn't release till that first mortar round off the ramp. What the heck is going on?
How hard is it to actually put a C-6 in your truck? Is there a sticky somewhere that I can look at? I know it's off your above topic, but I thought since your truck has a C-6 in it I would ask. On the tranny though, could it be overheating? Could the fluid be boiling and expanding to make excessive pressure? Just a thought.
It's not that tough. Go to the junkyard and find a 73 or later truck with everything you want. I went from manual steering to power, 3 on the tree to C6 and power disk brakes. I needed the steering column, steering knuckle and linkage. Also needed the transmission mount and crossmember. You should be able to do it in a few weekends with some help. Sure is nice to drive it without a clutch, but then that is a personal preference I am sure most will debate.
Cool. Thanks. I would assume that no driveshaft modification was needed?? I have very limited resources here but I would like to change over to the automatic because I got a C-6 for free. I was also wondering what type of torque converter to use, and if a transmission cooler is necessary? I'm going to use this truck as a daily driver, and as an off and on tow vehicle. Thanks.
You will more than likely have to have your driveshaft cut and balanced. Once you get the tranny in (don't forget to get the transmission crossmember and mount from the donor) you can measure from the output shaft to the center of the u-joint mount. My truck is a short step-side (style side) and I have a single drive shaft.
I use a standard torque converter for the transmission. The C6 is damn near bullet proof. I have drag raced with mine and it still works fine. If you have the old one, just make sure the crank pilot is the same. Also, going from manual to auto, you will need to remove the pilot bearing. Crank pilot size on the new torque converter should be 1.848 or 1.375.
I don't use a tranny cooler. I ran new lines to the radiator and she works fine.
Cool. I think I'll pull the old tranny myself (3 speed), change the front end suspension and column, then tow it into a prefessional for the install of the transmission. I know it's cheating, but I just dont have the expertese on the driveshaft, and I know that you want that near perfect. Thanks for the info!
