HELP! My timing marks are gone!

HELP! My timing marks are gone!
I'm trying to retime this 83 ranger 2.3l and there are no timing marks. I guess there was a sticker at one point, and it wore off. There are grooves in the plastic, and one of them is abigger groove, which I think is 0deg TDC, but I'm not sure.
Does anyone have a picture, or can someone tell me if this is right? Thanks

Take all the spark plugs out, get a dial gauge and turn the engine slowly by hand, measuring the lowest and highest points on cylinder #1. The highest point is 0 degrees.

That would work, but I dont have easy access to a dial guage, and I don't want to buy one for this, it justs seems to easy if I had that little sticker. Do we have any other suggestions?
