I got a harmonic balancer(3rd groove for future power steering) from an 83 E100, and I'm pretty sure it has different timing marks. Did they use a pointer on the pass side? I set the timing by vac gauge, and a lot of test & tune. The old marks on my(who know how old) 300 say it's 28* initial. If I go to the pass side, it reads in the teens. Just wondering what it's at so I dont get too much total advance.
Too much or not enuf is just a slight worry. It used to ping under load, so I tightened up the 2 dizzy springs(2 light ones used). Runs velvetty smoooth and power is good.
I did it with a new paint mark, and it was only a few degrees off. It was then that I realized the Summit ignition box is likely the culprit. I'm thinking that's when the spark event starts(runs milti sparks for 20* of rotation), so I just gotta tune by ear as I've been doing. All is happy, and mpg is up a little now that its dialed in a little better.
I was going from points, so I needed to get some sort of box, and the Summit was essentially a Mallory(according to the spex). It fires up super easy hot or cold, dont even need choke above 50*. I have almost the same setup as you, except the cam exhaust, & ported head.
