30 degrees before tdc?

I have a 1975 360 with an isky 262 supercam, edel performer intake and 750 carb, and dynomax headers into a single 3 inch exhaust. When I dial in the timing, It hovers between 28 and 32 degrees before top dead center when it idles nice. It runs pretty good but backfires on occasion. Is this odd? I've read on here that FE's usually like 12-14 btdc, but its super lopey at idle and is very hesitant on the street. Thanks for any help!

Did you set it with the vacuum advance hose pulled off the distributor and plugged?

vacuum advance hook up correct?

AirSmitty, do you have the vacuum line hooked to ported vacuum on the carb, sounds like your on a manifold vacuum port. 11-12 degrees initial with total at 36-38 degrees. Just a starting point. Carl.......o&o>.........

The vacuum line is connected to the carb. You're supposed to put it on the one that doesn't have vacuum at idle right?

dizzy vacuum

That's correct. Check the ported line with the engine idling, should have none. Raise the rpm's, you should start to get a vcuum signal. Is the mechanical advance functional? Vacuum advance diaphragm leaking? Diaphragm pliable and functional? A bad dizzy or lack of advance is like a bad carb. Carl......o&o>..........
