Does anyone know what the possible reasons for a check engine light coming on? All my gauges read ok. Could it be an emmissions issue? or other things as well. If it's too much to list could you point me in a direction that I could find out the issues that the "check engine light" points to? Thanks again for all the help!!!
You can buy a vehicle specific code reader at AZ or Pep Boys. Or you should be able to read it if you have a manual. Most of them give directions how to do it yourself. Guessing can get real expensive. It is probably the emisions gremlin. Good luck with it.
The Check engine light could be a whole bunch of problems ranging from code 12 to code 340. There is a way to check the codes with a paperclip, but I would recommend buying a code reader. They cost about 30 dollars at pepboys, even cheaper on Ebay. I got mine for 10 dollars. It will come with instructions on how to retrieve codes. You'll have to buy a haynes or chilton manual, so when you find your code, you'll be able to find out how to test and repair the problem.
Third vote: Get the code reader. And be thankful the "CEL" did come on... what's worse is when a computerized engine runs like crap and the CEL doesn't come on... Then you need a more sophisticated diagnostic computer (or add-on PC software) that will monitor the various sensors in real time.
You can also go to most Auto Zone stores and they will read the codes for free.
But that is just the starting point. For example, if it gives you a code for an EGR problem, that doesn't mean the EGR is bad. There are proceedures to find the exact cause, for which you'll need a manual. Same with any code you get.
