I have a '73 460 out of a T-bird in my 77 F-250 and it has too much total timing. The intial timing is set a 8 deg. I'm not sure of what it should be, but that could be adjusted with out much problem. However, under load with vacuum I run up to 54 deg, which I understand is way too much and I run too lean. The truck has a carter carb, I'm not sure which one. The truck starts well and doesn't seem to have any other problems. My mechanic suggested to get a mallory dist. with out a vacuum advance and just go mechanical, I found one on ebay for about $120. Is this the best idea?
you should have around 34 to 38* total (depends on engine combo). Don't worry about total timing with the vacuumline connetced. The vacuum advance does not come into play when your running wide open as the vacuum drops to 0 or near 0. Make sure your vacuum is not coming directly off the manifold - you want ported vacuum. Another thing you can do - if your really concerned is just leave the vacuum off. Why buy another distributor if theres nothing else wrong with it. Finally, I limit the vacuum to my dizzy but inserting a vacuum hose connector (straight plastic type) of which I drilled a small hole in to bleed off some vacuum at idle and part throttle.
I have a Mallory dizzy with mechanical advance in a Pontiac 400 and it runs like a champ. I like the fact that once I set the timing, it stays put. I don't ever have to check it again. If you want a rock steady, reliable dizzy, go with the Mallory.
Thanks for the info. I think I get the dizzy, but after I take care of my other issues (new turn signal switch & a new kick down cable). It sure seems like I have found a new way to get rid of my money. I think my boat just went into second place.

Check out this web site for some good recurve info.
Another thing to concider is the weight of your truck vurse that of a car. Trucks in general need the vacum advance to get the rpms up with out using more gas the required to move the weight. Superdave's link for reincarnation is a good link. It will break down the internals of the distributor and show you what you can do to stop the total advance from being so large. For less then $30 you can fix it. Unless you do want to spend money when you don't have too.
