1978 302 timing setting

Ok so I have been trying set the timing on this 302. I used the Chilton manual but the settings just don't seem right. I'm working on a 1970 f100 with a 1978 302 in it. It has a 600 edelbrock carb and procomp distributor and headers. Ok so this is my problem. When I remove the vacuum from distributor and idle it up to 800rpm with vacuum plugged I set it at 6deg BTDC and when give it gas it seems to sputter and pop out of exhaust at 2000-4000rpm but it is quick and responsive. I tried moving it all the way up to 8,10,12 and 14deg BTDC. The popping out of exhaust goes away but it is very sluggish. I tried it the other night and had it set up where it was running very nice with no popping but after I took it down the street and kicked the 4barrel in the truck got really crappy. My setting was 12deg BTDC with vacuum still on. From a stop and applying slight gas it seem to be sluggish and like it was sputtering again. I'm really at a lost here and would like to know the best or exact settings for the timing and bestway to do it. With Advance vacuum on or off? Also I'm not the best with the carbs but does anyone know how to set the carb. I read the manual but I don't know the jet size or what percent is per turn... I moved each screw out 3 half turns and 1/4. It seems to be ok but I'm not sure. Thanks and any help would be greatful

There should be no vacuum to the dizzy at idle. Set the dizzy back to the 6 degrees if that is the setting, then adjust the carb. Turn each side in till it almost dies, then back out till it runs smooth.

Make sure there is no vacuum at idle to the dizyy.!!! Only ported.

How clean is the Carb? That can make a huge difference.

This Chevy carb adj video can be a bit deceiving. They tell you to use the full vacuum port for the dist. ; which is wrong.

Use the port that has NO vacuum at idle.
