I have a ford f150 with manual locking hubs. I crashes the right side of my truck but i destroyed my rim and knocked off the manual hub completely. You can now see the tail end of the axel shaft and i was wondering how hard is this to replace and is it expensive to do or should i get the new warn manual lockinghubs? thanxs its an 1988 4x4 5-0 and its locked up front
What actually is missing and needs to be replaced?
If you still have the hub and bearings on, it's a peice of cake.
Slip a new one on and bolt it down.
If you need to replace the hub, it's a little more work but really not that hard. But you WILL need the special bearing tool to remove nut off the spindle, a pickle fork (ball joints/tierod end)and a small pick or two (inner hub lockring).
manual hubs aren't too terribly difficult to install. me and my dad put them on my '93 4x4 because the automatic hubs were going wierd and it only took us a few hours...
if you have the flange styl hub, it will be very expensive. I have an 88 4x4 as well, someone stole the ***** off of mine. Ford charges $350 a side for new hubs. I am still searching salvage yards, but havent had any luck. Hopefully yours are not the flange. there is no aftermarket hub for that style. Good luck.
Sorry about the delay. The only thing missing is the locking mechanism the hub is there but the part that you manually turned to lock the hubs is broken off. I have rigged it by attacking a haevy duty vinyl plastic and ducktapped it to my hub until i can find the hub> you said something about a flange hub could you please tell me the signifigance and major differences betweern flang hubs and non flange hubs. Thank you

The biggest difference in my opinion is that the flange type (Yes, I have them ) are junk and like quincyjr said.....very expensive to replace.
To tell the difference...easy......the good ones ( non-flanged for lack of a better word) have 6 allen head bolts around the outside of the locking handle. The flange type......usually most of the assembly comes off w/ the wheel. Now for those of you w/ access to a salvage yard where you can pull parts.....check this pic....shows all the pieces to convert flange to non-flange http://broncograveyard.com/products/cat/20/250/32136
