I have a 1988 f-150 4.9l engine. I have a broken vacuum line that goes thru
a wiring harness that runs along the fuel rail. It looks like it hooks into a relay on the drivers side of the engine and goes to some type of air acuator on the passenger side of the engine. What is this vacuum line for and is it hard to replace? Do they sell the plastic line and rubber connectors for them?
The line is pink in color and is a hard plastic.
I have a 92 F150 with the same engine. I don't know if its the same as mine but I'll tell you what it does in my truck. It comes around the back of the engine to the drivers side and hooks into some type of EGR sensor or regulator then T's off and a green line goes up to the EGR. I don't know if you can buy a new one or not but I've fixed them with heatshrink tubing. If a hole is worn in the tubing the heat shrink works great. If it is a clean break I'd probably tape it straight first and then heat shrink it. But nothing is better than buying a new one.
If its the green vacuum line it should go to the EVR (EGR Vacuum Regulator) at least on a '90 thats where it goes. The EVR is on the drivers side near the coil. There is also the TAB (Thermactor Air Bypass) and TAD (Thermactor Air Diverter) solenoids in that same area. All of this stuff is in the emmissions controls. Other components in this are the EGR, Air Bypass Valve if you have an air pump and the Air Control Valve. If you have a manual this stuff is usually discussed in the Emmissions chapter. Chapter 4 in the Chilton book.
You can add a short peice of rubber vacuum line, I just replaced mine. Vip sells a repair kit for the the pink line to. Pink vacuum lines goes to either the TAB or TAB soleniods. Your lucky I had all three vacuum lines melt, pink black and black. 87 f150 4.9
