2. Where is the Inertia switch? The Haynes manual I have says it is on the firewall to the left of the brake pedal but I don't see it there. Am I just incompetent?

The switch is there. It's a black plastic box about half the size of a pack of cigarettes. Reach up....way up...under the brake pedal and feel for a plastic box with a finger size hole at the top. That hole is the reset button.
