Yes I have used the search. I haven't seen a thread dedicated to "Best Downpipe". I would like to here from everyone about their down pipe experience. After I install my gauges that is my next mod.
I just ordered a dp from Dale at Tymar Performance for my 95. starts at 3 then to 3.5 then finally to 4 where i can connect it right to my 4" exhaust. Be interested to know others opinions also...
On pre 99 models I found that a two-peice down pipe was easiest to install without tweaking the firewall to much. Mine is a diamond-eye I bought from Motorhaven. IMO there really isn't a best. It all depends on application, material it's made from, size and of course price. Just do a little shopping around before you set your mind one. This goes with just about any aftermarket items for a diesel truck.
Check out the Bully Dog pipes. I put a 3 inch downpipe which is in two pieces for ease of installation. Be prepared for some beating and banging of the firewall to get it to fit though. From there it is four inches the rest of the way. No muffler, sounds great!
I've got a Hypermax. It starts at 3" at the turbo, and bells to 3.5" once it clears the firewall. Dale has been working on his 3" - 3.5" - 4" downpipe for a while, and if it's ready, that's the one I would recommend. It's also the one I would buy if I had it to do all over again.
I bought a 3" 2 piece stainless steel Banks pipe from Porta-diesel for about $240. A little high compared to some of the other pipes on the market, but Banks didnt get to be one of the leaders in diesel power for nothing. Not to mention it is Stainless, not aluminized steel like most others. Intstall was a snap....a few snips in the seam where the firewall and floorpan meet and bent them down out of the way. Now removing the stock pipe was the booger....had to chop the top off with a reciprocating saw...took about 30 minutes and 2 blades. This was done on my 97 reg. cab 4x4 5spd. Well worth the money and the Banks unit fits very well and comes with the threaded bung for a thermocouple for a pyrometer.
Level2-
The bung for a pyrometer in the downpipe should not be used. The probe for the pyrometer should be installed pre-turbo.
Not to sound argumentative, but just because something says "Banks" on it, doesn't make it worth the money to me. My aftermarket turbine housing was made in the same factory as the Banks model, and to the same specs. The difference: The Banks model has the word "Banks" on the side, and mine doesn't. Oh, theirs is also about $300, while mine was $130.
