88 460 truck engine, what is compatable

I just tore down the top of the engine and found parts of the piston in the oil galley and bent push rods on #8

I'm looking at my options:
1. buy rebuilt engine
2. rebuild this engine
3. replace with pulled engine after new bearings, rings, oil pump, timming set... and have valve job done.

The question is on option 3, what engines are compatable. I'll be sticking with a 460 and I know they came in Crown Vics and F/E trucks/vans but I don't know if these would be different.

I do know that the EFI heads are different, but I'd be keeping my heads and just getting a short block and going thru it.

I know the BEST option is to buy a rebuilt engine or have this one rebuilt, but I still want to concider all the options.

If I can, I'd like to stay in the $1,000 price range and that means that I'd be rebuilding it myself. I have no problem doing that, as I've done many before, I'm just concerned that the cost of fixing this engine might be over the budget.
