LSD or Locker

I would like to improve the traction of my truck which is a F-Superduty (F-450) its a 2wd. I have tractions troubles climbing dirt driveways with a empty truck I would say I need a traction aid for 10-20% of the places I go.

I have been looking into the Detroit Truetrac again it seems to be the best bang for the buck. I really don't want to be dealing with the clanging and banging of a full locker. I thought about a Lockright Lunch box locker suposidly its not as harsh as a Detroit locker.

Keep in mind I have a Dana 80 with dual wheels and this truck carries loads upto 7000lbs. When I'am traveling down the highway though the twists and turns I don't want the axle shafts or something letting go because the locker.

My other question is they list the Truetrac good for gear ratios 4:10+ does that mean 4:10s and taller or 4:10s and lower. I have 5:13 gears with 37 spline shafts. If it means taller than I'am screwed the only option I would have is the lockright.

Any ideas

Given the stress, I would think a full locker would be better than a drop in one. Also, I would go for a locker over a limited slip because I bought and paid to have a limited slip installed once, and the performance was marginally better. They still did the "spin one tire" thing. Have you looked at a selectable locker, like the ARB, ox, or electrac? They may be a good thing to consider.

I'd probably look at an ARB or a torsion type rear. you don't want to be hauling a lot of weight with your rear end banging.

I agree with Bremen. You don't want thousands of pounds on the back of that truck when your locker is banging while engaging and disengaging...talk about stress!!! Poor axleshafts! Try to find a selectable.

The ARB is made for the Dana 80 and will work for the 5:13 gear ratio but the price is enough to make a person

The price for the ARB itself is 1200 CND plus another 300 for the compressor plus the labour for install thats the most expensive traction up grade so far.

Its in the back of my head I still thinking about the ARB I do like the selectability so it runs like a open diff and almost like a spool locked.

Even a Detroit Locker for my application is 1000 dollars CND plus instalation.

I ran a full detroit locker in a D70hd, in a 1ton dually 2wd for the same basic reason you mentioned getting in and out of driveways except mine was for pulling a gooseneck trailer. I loaded that trailer with upto 18 1100lb cows at a time, and pulled all over with it on many types of surfaces and all weather conditions, when I first bought it I had the same concerns you do about the "banging", and quit frankly I was almost disappointed as it very rarely did much banging that was noticable manly in a tight corner right after coming back straight it would bang once if you were accellerating, ant that was just to relock the mechinism.
I know everyone on here is anamoured with the arb, but in my thinking they are a over priced waste of time, and money, you do NOT need a selectable in the rear of a truck, either you do or you don't need a locker in the rear, and dropping over $1500 plus install into it is crazy. I can maybe see it if you are a dedicated rock crawler, and dont have lockout hubs then maybe, but other than that go with the detroit your wallet will be fatter, and you will be every bit as happy.

The main reason I like selectables, even for the rear, is that I drive on ice and packed snow during the winter. A spool or detroit seriously sucks on those conditions, where an open diff is optimal. Heck, my throttle is so reponsive its tough to keep it straight when the roads are just wet.

That said, I still run detroits, but thats mainly because the cost of selectables is ridiculous.

Monster and Pro, I agree with you guys. I am not trying to contradict myself, but I would just go with a detroit too, and be happy. My friend has one in the bronco, and it is a little hairy on the ice, but doesn't bang as much as I thought it would. I will be getting one. I just thought he might be happier with selectable, but at those prices, I would go for the detroit.

What about a Lunch box locker like the lockright its even cheaper still easier for me to install. A Detroit locker for me is still 1000 bucks plus I have to travel close to 200mile round trip to have it installed. The Lockright will only cost me 500-600 dollars and I can have the local heavy truck shop install it for me. I haven't got a price on a Truetrac yet but it would be the same I would have togo to a rear end shop to have it installed.

Like I said I need extra traction when the truck is empty when the truck is loaded there is very little wheelspinning. If I have 1000lbs on the truck the tires will slip and grab but anymore weight the tires rarely spin unless the driveway is real loose dirt or mud.

With a empty truck the tires will spin heavy some driveways I have dirt and rocks flying everywhere. If its a slippery concrete driveway then theres burning rubber I have left some good black patches on customers driveways
