I have a 1990 F350 with a 7.3L diesel that runs great but get very poor fuel mileage. Does this meen the truck need new injectors or fuel pump? Also the truck seems to have lots of power till I hook up to my fifth wheel camper....then the wind slows me down to 40 - 45 mph. Could installing an aftermarket turbo help?
Need more info to give you advice, Power Stroke? What Trans? What rear end gear ratio? What is bad Milage? What work has been doe recently? One thing that comes to mind is if someone has worked on the fuel system recently they could have messed up the Injection Timing.
I've just purchased the truck. It has an air asspreated 7.3l diesle with a 4 spd automatic, not sure of the rearend?? I do know the truck has all kinds of power..can spin the dual wheels. But she only gets 5-6 mpg. When I hook up to the camper she pulls really good.. till we hit a slight head wind then we are down to 40-45 mph. The truck always smokes like crazy first thing in the morning but then seems to clear up. I have a freightliner that does not even smoke that much.
A lot of guys try messing with the injector pump timing and really don't know what they are doing. Un fortunately you will probably have to take it to a dealer to get the timing checked as it requires special tools. Does it smoke heavy during heavy acceleration? This could mean bad injectors, and they can be pop tested in the engine. Most of the normally asperated 7.3 got poor milage due to extremely low gear ratios used with them. Most of my 7.3 experience was with U-Haul was using the 7.3 in the F-350 and E-350 truck chassis. We had a lot of these problems. See if there are any codes but on the older 7.3 there just wasn't many imputs to the engines just the fast idle solinoid.
