i just found this old one cylinder horizontal shaft engine in a neighbor's trash, it looks like its in good shape, but i dont know a thing about it, heres the numbers i found on the nameplate
Sears Roebuck & Co.
model number: 500.20864
serial number: 180858
if anybody can tell me any more about this engine, id appreciate it, it looks like it could run, but its missing the spark plug, so i havent been able to try and start it. its a rope spin start from the looks of it(you wind the rope around the pulley on the flywheel and pull the rope) (not rewind start)
I'm not sure how far back this goes, but every Sears/ Craftsman Engine in the last two decades for sure was manufatured by Tecumseh. The Tecumseh service manuals have in the back Sears #'s to Tecumseh #'s coversion charts. If you go to your local power equipment dealer, they could get you a manual.
ok, so i cant figure out how to post pics directly on here, so heres a link to my yahoo photo album which has a few pics of the engine, please look em over and see what you can find out: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/nick_s...bum?.dir=/42f0
It looks like a 5 to 7hp tecumseh or briggs motor. If I had a better picture of the head (I need to see the bolt pattern) I could tell ya for sure. The mechanical governor indicates it's at least 5hp. It may even be a robin. It does have a hole for the spark plug right?
It is most likely from the early fifties, judging by the oil bath air cleaner and the lack of a recoil. I don't think it is a Briggs, because of the shape of the head, and the lack of the letters B/S on the flywheel cover that most fifties Briggs had. Looking at the slope of the flywheel cover I would say there is a good chance it is a Wisconsin engine. There is a possibility it is a Tecumseh, but I think Wisconsin is the most likely.
Have you tried a Sears Service center? They can look up parts and info on just about everything Sears has ever sold.
