2004 Replacement Air Filters

I ordered a K&N air filter for my 2004 scab 4x4 , 5.4 engine from Carquest 2 weeks ago. The one I received was correctly labled for my truck but didnt come even close to fitting. Returned it to Carquest and they rechecked the numbers, even called K&N to verify the number of the filter to the make and model of the truck. After a little investigation by K&N, turns out, Ford installed the 2005 air filter housing on my truck. It kinda sits on top of the motor and has a tray which pulls out very easy to replace the air filter. K&N air filter for the 2005 fit it perfectly.
Anyone else have the same problem?

I wonder if you have the new 2004 which seems to have a lot of 2005 equipment.

You described the air filter replacement on my 2005 perfectly. I got my K&N at Autozone. Their computer showed I needed a conical filter, what I imagine you would need for a Cold Air Intake style. Luckily, I found the part number on the K&N website, and had it with me so it could be pulled off the shelf. I fully expected to wrestle with the housing and the clips to take things apart and put them back together again, but that tray blew me away. I was almost wondering what I did wrong or forgot to do after I was done because it was so simple. Kudos to the Ford engineers on this one.

Red face

Mine was the same way a flat filter instead of the cone shaped one.

Mine is also the 2004.
Did it help the mileage and power.
I have one on order from Fox preformance in Calif.
$32.00 much better price than local AutoZone or Checker Auto here in Colorado.
Next step may be a Chip..
Enjoy
Ron

I'm not sure what kinda milage I'll get with it yet, cause it needs a little break in period, But FORD really did a great job of making it easy to slide out the tray and replace the filter. Showed it most of the guys at work and they thought it was a great idea to. My truck was made in august 2004 and might have some of the new 2005 improvements.

This is a funny quote, "the new 2004 model with 2005 equipment" LOL. In 2004 there were the "new" model and the "heritage", it would appear that your parts store is providing you with parts for the heritage model

The new 2004 model and the 2005 model F-150 are basically the same truck.

The first time I popped the hood I noticed the air filter and thought how cool is that!

Every time I have shown some one my truck I always point out how easy it is to change the air filter and people all do the same as I did. Everyone thinks it is a pretty cool idea. Some times the engineers do get it right.

How do you know when your truck was made?? I just bought a 2004 because of the rebate, and it was just what I was looking for.

I think if you look on the sticker inside your door you should find a Date of production. Also what happened to the cartridge style Oil filter? I thought Ford was gonna do that with the new 5.4...I guess not. Instead they kept the oil filter in a crappy spot...otherwise yes the new for '04 slide out tray is great! By the way I personaly wouldn't waist my money on a simple K&N replacement...your much better off buying an entire kit....unless all you car about is improved response.

The build date is on the original window sticker. Might be other places also, but I know it's on the window sticker.

What I have learned from my dealer is that FORD would need to proove without ANY doubt that the modification that one did to thier vehicle was the direct cause of a component failure. For instance, if one were to attach an aftermarket filter mount to thier vehicle, and the hose came loose and you therefore cooked your engine due to lack of oil, FORD would not replace or repair your motor. Also, if one attached an aftermarket intake system and then experienced a problem with said charging system, FORD could not state that since the vehicle was altered, they would not repair it.
The best thing to do when altering vehicles is to make sure that documentation is kept for ALL modifications made. Also, if there are any problems that you notice with anything, make sure to take it to the dealer and have it documented, so they can;t turn around on you later down the road.
