Reason: cant spell
Well that's because it's not a Performer. The Streetmaster was designed & manufactured in the 70s as a semi performance manifold but still retained halfway decent fuel mileage. It's a single plane design as opposed to the dual plane design of the Performer which means that it should have a higher RPM range.
If you've already got the intake and carb I'd go ahead and install it. I've never haeard anything bad about the Streemaster and it's going to be better than the cast iron 2V manifold on there now.
I have an Edelbrock Streetmaster on my 400. It is a single plane manifold, while the Performer is a Dual Plane. The dual plane intake will provide better low end torque, while the single plane intake will be better at higher RPMs. Edelbrock told me that the Streetmaster is only rated to 4500 RPM. The Performer is rated to 5500.
I find intake manifold specs leave a lot to be desired. They should spec the airflow in CFM at a certain pressure drop like heads and carbs. Also spec the air velocity as a percentage of the speed of sound (MACH). This is the MACH number.
The RPM rating only pertains to one particular motor, that is cubic inch, head flow, cam timing etc, and it doesn't lend itself to comparisons.
I have no complaints about my Streetmaster, but until some puts a motor on a dyno with Edelbrock, Weiand, Single Plane and Dual Plane intakes, I can't say for sure which is better.
Since you have the Streetmaster, try it for performance. If you think that you need better throttle response and low RPM torque, get a dual plane intake. If you think that you need better high RPM performance try a Weiand 8010(Dual Plane), or a Holley Street Dominator(Single Plane).
I like Edelbrock carbs, others like Holleys. I would certainly use a Holley carb, that I had before I spent money on an Edelbrock. A 600 CFM carb should be the right size.
Tim Meyer is building a 400 with aussie heads and quench pistons. He is looking for loaner intake manifolds to use for dyno runs on this motor. I sent him a Holley Street Dominator that I bought on Ebay. If anyone has any spare intakes laying around, this is a good chance to get a direct comparison of various intakes. Here is his website.
