I just bought a 72 Ranchero 500. The VIN code says it has a 429 but it isn't so. It is a 400 or 351-C. How do I tell by looking? I was told that the 400 had a much wided intake. What is the with of a 400 intake or what is the with of a 351-C intake. Help, I wanna order parts but I had better know what I am ordering!
If you look at your block just above the starter there should be some numbers on the block then wright them down and post the numbers someone will be able tell you what you have.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Jul-02 AT 00:37 AM (EST)] If the thermostat housing is on the front of the intake itself and it has a big thick aluminum timing cover, and a short bypass hose running from the front of the intake to the waterpump, it would be a 429 or a 460.
All I can say on the engine options is, the 72 Ford Torino had the 351C, and the 400, and a 429 available. Which is pretty much what the Ranchero was at that time frame. So
If the thermostat housing comes from the block just in front of the intake, no bypass hose, and it has a flat thin stamped steel plate timing cover it would be a 400, 351M. or a 351C.
Also look on the intake manifold just in front of the carburetor for the firing order stamped on it.
1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8 for the 429-460.
1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8 for the 351C, 351M, 400
There are more ways of course, but this is a few quick ways to tell.

If it is a 1972 or earlier engine, it should have an ID tag held on by the same bolt that hold the coil to the intake. This would tell you exactly what engine you have. Some say right out what engine, while others need decoding. I can decode it for you. If it is later than 1972, you will need to go the serial number route. That would narrow it down to 351 or 400, but will not tell you if it is a 351W, 351C/M which are all possible depending on the year. You would then need to identify it further by the water inlet (vertical=Cleveland, horizontal=Windsor).
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Jul-02 AT 08:02 PM (EST)]Thanks for the responses. I am totally lost!!! I also posted this question in a new post titled: What Motor Do I Have? Any Number Crunchers?
Other: The water "neck" comes out of the passager side of the BLOCK and not the intake. It has a 2V EGR Motorcraft Carb. Small size spark plugs. The intake measures approx 13" wide. I pulled a valve cover off and it has "staggered" valves (not all in a row).
Does any of these number helps to identify what motor I have?
since the 351c was made from 1970-1974 a part num of D7 rules that out. so its either a 351m or 400. since you can turn a 351m, into a 400 for cheap, it doesnt matter.
