5th Wheel Wiring on SD

I don't have my truck yet so I'm doing some research. I noticed when I was comparing brands that brand "c" offers to prewire their truck for a 5r.

Those of you with experiance is the SD prewired for a 5r?

If so where is the connection at?

If not how much does it cost to wire it and is it a do it yourself affair or should I have it done by someone?

I've heard there's an extra wiring stub-out on Fords from the 7-pin harness, but I was unable to find it on mine. Otherwise, I've been getting quotes of anywhere from $50 - $109 to install a bed-side plug (which is the way to go for a 5er). The $109 was at an RV dealership, the $50's were truck and hitch shops.

My '04 was pre-wired with the connector below the bumper. It's kinda easy to put one on the fender wall, just need to splice into the wires or use a jumper from the rear one.

If you get the tow package you will get a 7 pin plug under the reciever just like huntercgr said.

I wired mine and it was very easy just splice into the wires on that connector. But if you can get it done for around $50 when I would do that, Because the cost if the connector with the pigtail is around $37 and if you do not have a hole saw add another $15.

Wink

I've run mine before to the under-bumper factory plug. The newer trailers appear to have plenty of length to reach. Provided you don't risk binding up your cable the only draw back I can see is cable friction on the tailgate, bed, or bumper, and wear occurring on either the vehicle finish or on the rubber insulation of the cable itself.

You might also consider installing an eye hook or hanger under the fifth wheel to hold off the cable, remove slack, and suspend it over the bumper (i.e. the plug) to avoid the above mentioned problems. Just some thoughts. This solution is also free.
