I assume you're talking about the PATS key - your key has a chip. Have you tried the other key assuming they gave you two keys when you bought the Escape. Some people have had problems when they've had another PATS key on the key chain.
PATS keys are inexpensive (around $10) and you can program extra spares yourself. If you can't start it and don't have a spare, the dealership will reprogram yours for around $100.

PATS keys can easily be had on ebay for $10-15. You can only program another key if you already have 2 keys that already work properly, otherwise you need to take a trip to the dealership service department. They will be able to reprogram your key or cut you a new one and program it. I have have seen it happen too many times if you have another PATS style key on the same key ring. At this time I have the key for my 2004 Ranger and my 2005 Focus on the same ring but have had no problems as of yet, but if you read the owners manual it warns you about putting similar keys on the same ring.
