I rebuilt the 2bbl carb from a 76 360 and put it on my 67 390 and somehow it has a pretty bad vaccume leak. I did plug up all the vaccume hoses and it still idels around 2000. to make sure it was the carb and not anywhere else i took a carb from a 78 351m and put it on and no vaccume leak, but that carb was working really good until today when it just started pouring gas out of the top at the choke flap while running. So i shut it down before a fire starts. What would cause this carb to have gas pour out of the top? And does anyone have any idea where the vaccume leak could be comming from on the other carb? Also when i put on the carb with the vaccume leak the engine started blowing tons of blue smoke as of burning oil. It didn't burn any oil that you could see with the carb without the vaccume leak. Can anyone help me with my problems?
Just a thought: I had a vac.leak with a new carb on my '68/390 and it turned out that the gasket was not the correct size because I had the 'water jacket' plate under the carb...the 3/4 inch plate with the inlet for hot water and with a vacuum port...- Don't know if yours has one as well.
At the time I was stumped, so my mechanic actually replaced it, and I am not sure what he asked for to get the correct gasket.
Gas coming out the top means that the needle is stuck open ro the seat is loose. The top needs to come off the carb, the float and needle removed the seat checked to be sure it is tight, the float and neddle reinstalled and the float level checked.
