I have recently noticed on my '99 f250 4x4 v10 that the speedometer does not register below 20 mph. If I am traveling below 20mph, it remains on zero. The moment that the truck is traveling above 20, the needle jumps up. As I slow down, the needle is normal until 20mph, and then it drops to zero. Does anyone else have this problem? What could be the cause? It registers fine above 20mph. My ABS light is also on. Could the two be related?
Probably the speed sensor in the rear axle. It's my understanding that these can accumulate metal particles over time and affect it's function. Many have had luck simply cleaning them and then reinstalling the sensor.
Thanks for the advice, I think it helped me find my problem.
I cleaned the sender and reinstalled it. My problem is now worse. Now my speedo doesn't work until the vehicle is traveling 30 mph, and the shift from first to second feels like my tranny has a shift kit in it. If you stand on the pedal and the shift is after 30mph, it is smooth like normal. I am guessing that the tranny needs input from the sender to calibrate the shifts. I called Ford and the part is $25. I hope that this will fix my speedo and make the shifts normal again.
