I have a 91 1 ton crew cab 4x4. I had it smoged last week and it passed the emissions portion of the test, However, they check base timing by uncapping a plug in the wiring from the electronic fuel module. When they uncap it on mine, the truck dies and will not start. If you put the cap back on it starts. I replaced the ignition module but no change. Anybody know what else it may be?
Yes to both. The plug is disconected to set, and check base timing. The smog shops check base timing by doing this also. However, if my engine dies when plug is removed neither can be done.
Ohhh I see now, i didnt realize that, boy, if i tryed to get a sticker there, i think they would take my truck ant toss it in the scrap yard on me, emmisions, no way would it pass those. well i cant do much more on this topic, my books dont go above 88 on the 460. sorry. if i think of it when i go back down to school ill take a look on Alldata, and see if they give me any hints
Get your hands on a book and make sure they are unplugging the right wire. I think it is near the driver side hood hinge, not sure. Run some searches, there are many threads on this. Base timing spout
They must be pulling the wrong plug. On my 92 it's near the brake master cylinder. Stop the engine, pull the spout plug and then re-start to set the timing.
