89 F150 electrical problem

hi all, been a while since I have been a member after selling my lightning but now I am back with a 89 F150 4X4 4 speed. I am having couple issues may or may not be related hope you guys can help!
First off when driving sometimes the truck just dies but comes right back on sometimes several times sometimes not at all. The only problem if it decides to do it when sitting still the it doesn't want to start. Turns over and its getting fuel just won't fire! Try again couple minutes later its fine.
The next issue is the gas tanks, it runs fine off the rear tank but the gauge either reads way past full or dead empty, on occassion it will read somewhere in between but usually full or empty. The front tank the guage works fine but I never use any fuel from this tank. With the switch on the front tank it still uses gas from the rear tank. Thanks in advance
Chris

If you are sure you are getting fuel to the engine, then I would check to see if there are any codes in the computer, and check the wiring around the dist. If you want to throw parts at it, I would replace the ignition module on the side of the dist and see what happens.

The next issue is the gas tanks, it runs fine off the rear tank but the gauge either reads way past full or dead empty, on occassion it will read somewhere in between but usually full or empty.
More than likely this is a bad fuel sending unit. Find the wire on the sending unit that goes to the guage, and take it off the sending unit. With the key on, and the switch to the rear tank, watch the guage. It should read full or empty. Then take the sending unit wire back at the tank, and ground it out to the frame. The guage should swing full scale the opposite direction. If it does, the wiring and guage are ok, and the sending unit is bad.

With the switch on the front tank it still uses gas from the rear tank.
Somewhere midway on the frame, you should have a fuel line switching unit, that switches between the tanks. Sounds like you need a new one of these.

Well got new ignition module today, 30 bucks at autozone if someone else is looking for one, this is about half of what autozone and dealer wanted. That resolved my truck cutting out so far. Did that this morning had to work rest of day. Will post results of other issues as I get them fixed. Thanks again
