I just bought a 92 aero XLT 3.0 short wheelbase. The steering becomes erratic on the highway and the wheel has a LOT of play in it. I also owned an 89 and never had this problem. A mechanic said the power steering belt is worn and the power steering fluid is burnt. By changing these things will the steering become normal again or do I need to look for front end parts??
Thanks
Look for steering parts. Have someone move the wheel back and forth while you look for the slack. Check the tie rod ends, the bushings that hold the rack and pinion, and the steering shaft. Usually not too hard to find.
To me it sounds like ball joints and tie rod ends the rubbers on stablizer bar are bad if it rattles on wash boardy roads. I just went through mine and it cost a lot.I replaced the coil springs, ball joints, tie rod ends, new rubbers on stabilizerbar, shocks, 2 front end alignments, cause it was to separt jobs.Bill was 700.00+ so plan on spending some dollars
I don't think just changing the steering fluid and belt will fix it, it would be hard to steer if these were bad. I think your steering rack is bad, mine on my 91 4.0 was totally shot and caused my steering to be very erratic, I changed it my self and then had a shop do the alinment, the new rack was only $85 with the old one from discount autos.
Good news everyone.. the outer tie rods were the only thing wrong with the car 180 bucks total to fix!! Now if I can just get rid of this hesitation on the freeway
