my steering wheel is getting kinda gross and i was wondering if the steering wheels from the newer 150s and expeditions would fit on my 92. thanks in advance.
ya i have cruise but no airbags. i was thinking of getting the wheel off of a truck that had the bags deployed so that i could just put the cover back on with no bag in there. would that work?
'92's didn't have air bags therefore the deployment system does not exist in the truck. There is no real reason to avoid putting an airbag equipped wheel into them but it will be useless and as Steve mentioned its hit-and-miss as to whether the cruise control connector remained compatible after the airbag was added in later years. And I don't know if anyone has priced those things lately but they're ANYTHING but cheap. A lot of expense (unless you pop one from a boneyard donor truck) just to replace the steering wheel. I have considered reupholstering the wheel in my own '92. Just haven't gotten around to it.
It has been discussed in this forum before, but I do not believe that successful results have ever been posted. If anybody has done this, speak up! Darn airbags... I never thought that it was a good idea to have a controlled explosion in your face while you were busy wrecking your vehicle.
You could just remove the air bag unit from the steering wheel.
As for the cruise control, the wiring could be figured out and sliced with out using the oem plugs.
have you thought about installing one of those new grant steering wheels that have the 4 buttons in the middle for cruise control and other things you want at the touch of a button. ill try and find the site that sells them. looked really trick i thought.
OK, I took at look at things while at the junkyard on Monday. As we know, the Broncos and corresponding F-series use the cylinder with the two flat sides to mount the steering wheel. The '97+ vehicles use a cylinder with a notch on each side to mount the steering wheel. I didn't bother looking at the wiring after that.
