Stroking a 460

Howdy all. I'm looking for any and all info i can gather on stroking a 460. I need links to crankshaft suppliers, and all the info i can get on which rods to use with which cid combinations. Thanks in advance!

Some stroker basics...

Stroke length - There are 4.5" stroker kits available, but 4.3" is about as far as you want to go unless you like the wrist pin being part of the cylinder oil ring groove. Scat cranks seem to be the most popular, and they make a good product. Eagle rods are usually part of the deal as well. Again, good products.

Bore - a 0.030 bore with a 4.3 crank will give you a 521. Hogging the cylinders out to a 0.080 will only get you an additional 12 ci (to 533 total). Since most every block will take a 0.030 with no problem but needs to be sonic checked for the 0.080 bore, I don't know that the extra 12 cu in is worth the trouble.

Carb - with a 521 you are increasing the diplacement by more than 13%, meaning that carb calcs for a 460 are out the window. For example, a 460 at 6000 RPM will require at least 798 cfm intake air flow. A 521 at the same RPM requires a minimum of 905.

Intake - Factory sized runners are great for an all-around 460 build, with the SCJ runners being a bit too big for anything but a dedicated street-strip combo. With a 521 the SCJ sized runners are actually just about right for a good street setup.

Headers - 2" primaries, minumum, for a street build.

Heads - A complete hog job on the factory heads, including bigger valves, will be necessary on even a modest stroker build. Again, the heads were optimized for feeding 460 CFM, not 521. If you have the bucks there are several aftermarket heads that will really wake up your stroker.

Cam - Take the advertised RPM range for a 429/460 cam and lower it by 500-800 RPM. The larger displacement shifts the effective RPM range of the cam down slightly.

There is more, but this should help get you started.

Thanks Brad. Printed and saved. Do you have a link or phone number for the scat crank people or dealers?

Matter of fact..first hit. If this doesnt' asnwer it, there were more pages of sites that hit on it. =)

Talk to monsterbaby (His ID name, found in Offroad & 4x4 forum alot), he's currently building a 460 stroker and knows exactly the information you'll need to know.

I bought my 557 Scat crank (4.5" stroke), Scat 6.7" rods and Probe pistons from AW Brown on eBay. He was easy to deal with and the price was good. Just type 460 stroker in the search box. I haven't fired it up yet so who knows if it will stay together but I'm sure having fun building it. Brad sure knows alot more than I do. I did have my block sonic tested.
