They are not that hard to do. I have change them on a few differewnt trucks. Change the u-joint on that side of the front axle while its apart. It would be a bummer to have to rip it all apart again when the u-joint fails before the balljoints do.
The platic isolator is metioned in this thread. I have not looked if mine are there or not. I would think they would be inexpensive and easy to replace.
I was also told by the Ford garage that they make anti-rattle brake pad clips. And that if the noise goes away when I brake, that I should check into these clips. However, I still have the thump when I brake, so I can knock that off my list.
replaced ball joints and shocks in the last six months and have also noticed thump on drivers side when hitting bumps , will check into spring isolators next
Anytime I have had this problem, I check the shocks first (especially if they are non OEM meaning they have been replaced). The top nut on the shock will look tight, you cant get it to wiggle by hand, but put a wrench on it and tighten it down more and sometime that will fix it. It won't look loose, but it is when the suspension extends and compresses.
My 99 makes a thump when I hit bumps to I have replaced balljoints and still have the isolaters in my springs I will check the sway bar and see if thats it
My 00 has the thump under the floorboard, I know it's the swaybar end link, it's quite shot...
Balljoints, by my standards, even the parts alone aren't cheap(and I'm used to working on heavy trucks) but, this is 1 ton stuff we are dealing with here. Did them in my truck.

My 01' f-350 4X4 has the same sound. It only happens when I hit the brakes to slow down. Its not immediate. More towards the end of the braking.
I guess its time to look under the truck.
This sounds exactly what mine is doing, I have crawled under neath and checked all sorts of stuff out to no end have I found anything, this weekend I am going to jack the front up and see what else I can shake loose. Keep me posted on what you find, if I find anything I will definately let you know.
I had the same problem on my 97' F2250 HD, this may sound silly but it was the drivers side seat mount. It had come lose and when i hit a bump the seat would thump aginst the mount bolt. It all felt like the noise was comeing from under the floor board.
Fishman, that doesn't sound silly very plausable to me, but I can only feel the bump with my foot on the floor, can't really feal it in the brake pedal that why I don't really think the brakes are the direct cause.
It is your body-mount on the frame popping. I had the same exact problem. It is a known issue with Superduty's. Mine started doing it when I put my lift on it.
I just put in a leveling kit. While swapping the front springs I noticed the beat marks where my passenger side shackel was hitting the body mount. Now with the new springs the thumping under the passenger side floor board is gone.
As I posted back in November, do yourself a favor and check out your front sway bar end link bushings. I had them replaced twice under warranty. The factory bushings are junk. With the weight of the Diesel, petroleum contaminants and all the mystery chemicals that are on the roads, rubber doesn't last. I just replaced the sway bar and the end link bushings with polyurethane, and the difference is night and day.
I replaced the end links and the rubber bushings bushing on the front sway bar and the thumping is gone. The thumping was bad especially on rough roads. The noise felt like the tires were bouncing and the thumping was felt under my feet on the floorboard. The installation was easy and I had it done in less than an hour. Anyhow, the thumping is gone and the ride is solid. Parts werer $44.00 at the local Ford dealer.

Although they did not contribute to the thumping, I’m still going to replace the shocks. I just turned 140,000 miles on my 99 F250 CC 4x4. Next week I’m having Rancho 17000 series shocks put on at the local Sears store. When I was under the truck I noticed that the rubber bushings were bad and the shocks looked original .
