We always put straw down for our airedale. Inside the doghouse and around it outside. If it gets really cold, we'll bring her inside to the house we built in the corner of the garage. She made it to 15, so I guess we were doing something right.

straw

Put a flap over the doghouse door and put a half bale of loose straw in there. Buy a couple of bales at $3 to $6 each and stow the rest in a dry place. Feed him good and he'll stay warm enough. You'll have to change out the straw about once a month or so. Very good insulation. Course you could always just bring him in on the laundry porch or in the garage.

I have a yellow lab and a dalmation, both outside dogs. I have two wooden dog houses that have carpet on the floors and each faces a different direction in case of wind changes. But when winter approaches I fill each house with hay, and even place it around the outside of each house. Both dogs have done fine, and sometimes even on the coldest days they just lay on the hay outside the houses. Of course I live on the southern NC coast and we don't get too many cold winters here.
