My truck in my sig. I have noticed the fire wall around the clutch master cylinder flexes when i depress the clutch. I called the autoparts store and they said only ford has it. I called the dealership and the guy there says that they don't have it. I asked him what it was is a heavy steel plate that goes on that part of the firewall. My dad is a metalergical engineer and can have one of his guys cut me a plate out of 3/8 pr 1/2" steel.
Do any of you have a template for one? Can any one describe the shape?
Thanks
DT
I too, was looking at repairing the flex in the firewall. I got lucky at the local scrappie because I found one of the repair kits already installed on a junker so I got it for about 2 dollars. Mine's an 85 F150 and if you pm me, I can send you a pic with measurements if you're thinking of fabricating your own.
DT, check my gallery for shots I took of the firewall kit. This is the one I got from the scrappie and it might help if you're thinking of making your own.
thanks for the help he asked if it was a 150 or 250 i might just try to make a heavy plate or see if i could get one for a 250 they should be the same right?
you have to remove the clutch master. The kit comes with a template, if you make your own, you'll have to make your own to locate the holes in the firewall to drill. Be careful to not go too thick, as the master bolts won't reach if you do, 1/8 to 3/16 will be plenty. I welded the plate to the trans tunnel, I didn't feel like fighting to drill the hole for that bolt. I only drilled the two holes near the master. You will have a total of four holes around the master hole, two for the original studs, two for holding the plate.
I too had this problem with my 91 Ranger 5spd. The firewall actually cracked around where the clutch pedal plunger went through the firewall into the slave cylinder. What a pain in the dupaa. I had some 1/4" aluminum scrap that I used to re-enforce the firewall from the interior side. I had to drill the crack to keep it from spreading then attach the plate. What really ticked me off is that three of the four Ford dealers I talked to, denied this to be an issue with other rangers. The fourth however, stated this is an issue and went so far to even say F-150s and some F-250s where having the same issues of cracked firewalls from lack of re-enforcing plates associated with manual transmissions. If you can't find a kit, try to make a paper/cardboard template, and go from there. I used aluminum because it was easier and faster to cut and grind to fit. Good luck.
How hard was this to put in? You don't need to take off any of the hydolic lines do you? I don't have a problem, yet, but I'll keep an eye out for one in the junkyard to put in.
i talked to the local racing fab shop and they can get me one i'm ordering it tommorow. Thanks for the part # Horton. I'm getting the whole kit. My dad was going to fab one for me but i didn't want to mess with where all the holes should go and what bolts to use. this kit comes with everything i'll let you know how it goes.
What size drill bit do i need for this?
You only take the master loose from the firewall and pedal, and put it out of the way. The drill sizes are told in the kit, and the bolts come with the kit.
awsome i'll keep ya'll posted on the progress.
the previous owner just put a couple screw in there and sort of half-as*ed it so i'm gonna fix it right.
i really cant blame him he was like 80 years old original owner
he kept it in a barn for years
