This is my first time on the site. I am a new a proud new owner of a 2003 F350 Lariat, CC DRW (4.10). I am the second owner but have no history on the vehicle as I bought it through a dealer. I traded in my 1995 7.3 litre Powerstoke. The difference is unbelievable! I love this truck but I have already found some small problems. One is that after driving it and it being up to operating temp, after shutting it off and restarting it, the idle stutters or fluctuates. Also I noticed that if it is idling for 3-4 minutes the idle jumps up a few hundred RPMs and stays there until you touch the peddle, then it goes back to a normal RPM .

Can someone tell me if these occurrences are normal?
Fluctuating idle is not normal. Check your oil level. It should be no more than half way between "MIN" and "MAX" in the crosshatched area. There are several other components involved that could cause that problem. Take it in. Make sure the service department has a certified diesel tech to work on your truck.
The idle increasing in rpm while Park and with the parking brake set on some trucks, depending on the flash level will do that.

Mine does this also, it has for a very long time. Idle all over the place when it's in park. Kicks up and runs high, maybe 800-1000rpms. Kinda like a gas vehicle when you leave the AC on and it kicks in.
I think it's good so that the cylinders won't get dry if left to idle low for a long time. So, I've never complained about it.
It does sound odd though.
I'll have to post a lot about all of my truck problems I've had; when I get more time. I've been reading lots on this site the last 2 weeks though.
Yes, I am not concerned about the kick up in idle, i read somewhere that this is designed in to help elimnate EGR valve failure, recharge batteries in cold etc. It is the wierd fluctuating idle that I am concerned about...and only when the engine is at normal operating temp.
A couple of thoughts: The fluctuating idle could be due to oil level or bad fuel. We have had that happen after a long highway trip with not the best of fuel.
The increase in idle is a normal function and beneficial function.
Good luck.
I have an 03 F-350 with a 6.0. At 3400 miles a rocker arm broke. at 15k I had problems with the Fuel water seperator which the dealer updated to the new unit. Now I have problems with a idle shutter. The dealer has reflashed the computer. next they replaced the air regulator module. next they replaced the EGR valve because it had frozen open from carbon. next they replaced the fuel water seperator because the seal around it was bad and allowing a gel to form inside ( I almost think the proximaty of the fuel seperator to the exhaust may be cooking the unit.) At 25K The dealer has now replaced a fuel injector because it was clogged they think from this gel from the fuel water seperation system. ( the computer diagnosed this as a fuel injector hanging open not clogged ? ) any suggetions other than push it over a cliff.

Uhhh, Welcome to the forum, but first where did you get the information on an air regulator? The fuel/water separator is on the other side of the frame from the exhaust. Do you drain the fuel/water separator on a regular basis? Do you use any fuel additives?

If you can drop me your VIN number, I can see exactly what has been done to the truck; we can help you more with the info
