I have been having trouble with my 87 6.9IDI not starting. From reading the other posts I have been able to determine that my glowpug relay is bad. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, I just have to keep cycling it until it starts. My question is- is it a bad sign that my truck will not start without the glow plugs even when it is warm out? The engine has 120k on it and seems to run good, although it does smoke going up hills and under load. Thanks for any info.
Wire the plugs up to a manual push button switch to bypass that damned relay. As long as the plugs are good you know they are cycling and the sommbich will start on cold days.
I thought I had a similar probem. I used an ohm meter to determine that I had 2 bad glow plugs. I purchased and installed 2 new ones. I still could not get it started, and had to cycle 3-4 times to finally get it to start. It only took a few days for the new glow plugs to expand at the tips and I had a pain of a time getting them out. To confirm which were bad and which were good I took them all out and 1 by 1 I connected them to the battery + and - terminals to see if they would get hot. Touch the top to + and the threded body side to -. It only takes 1-2 seconds for them to emit heat and smoke if dirty. My problem turned out to be the wait to start light indicator. The lightbulb was not making contact in the socket so I never new exactly when to start cranking the motor. I always waited too long and by then the glow plugs were cooling down and I could not start the motor. Once I put 2 more new glow plugs in and fixed the light, I can now crank the motor soon al the light goes out. It starts like a dream compared to before.
It is very hard to just guess what the problem may be, you will probably have to do some troubleshooting to test things out 1 at a time to really determine where the problem is.
I put mine on a manual switch with a dinger, don't leave them on for more than 7-8 sec.use doule coil glow plugs, they get hotter and last wwwaaaayyyy longer,I live in idaho and only plug my truck in if it gets below 15 deg.startes easy.
