I realize this is a Ford site, but I'm curious as to what is everyone's favuorite engine from Dodge and Chevy as well. Here's mine:
Ford-427
Chevy-327
Dodge-318
Well I like 7.3L diesel, good engine.
Also, Chevy made a few 302's, and those baby's rev, a friend of mine dropped one into a El Camino (I don't like them things one bit) But needless to say, its a fun engine. (I think its a bored out 283)
in the fords its 427 s/o chevy is the boss429 dodge has got to be 429/460
???
Ford and Chevy both made 427's, Chevy didn't make a 429 Boss either, that is also a Ford engine. Dodge NEVER made a 429-460 series...that's a Ford series of engines...
My own personal faves are the FE block Fords, preference leaning to the 390 and 428. For GM it had to be the 327 or the venerable 350. For Dodge, the 426 hemi's were the way to go, although they made many other good engines as well.
I tend to hang on to my vehicles for several years, so I have experience with relatively few engines.
Chryco: The venerable slant 6. Low powered, but long lived and very smooth.
Ford: The Vulcan 3.0L V6. The one in my wife's Aerostar never lets us down and has had a very low cost of ownership. If I had an appropriate vehicle for it, I think I'd like a 351W. Fairly low cost for performance parts because of commonality with the 5.0L, but a few more cubes to play with.
GM: OK. Severe bias here. Cadillac Northstar V8. I own a 94 STS and just love it. It's not as smooth as a Caddy engine should be, and it has some known weaknesses (head gasket failures) but this thing rocks. There is something about the sound of a 32 valve V8 wound out to 6300 RPM that plasters a silly grin on my face. I grin a lot...
Dodge; SB 318 or 340 BB 383 or 440 and also the 426 HEMI
I'm going to have join you on the MOPAR stuff. The thread says favorite, not necessarily best.
I favor the 340 MOPAR, especially the '68-71 models. I have a lot of personal experience racing a '70 340 Duster in showroom stock back when those were new. You could really embarass folks with really bigger engines and much higher horsepower ratings. That was a drastically underated engine and with the heads on the engine in its early years, it could really breathe. Redline was 6,000 rpm with hydraulic lifters, but I can tell you that engine would turn 6,700 rpm without lifter float in high gear and do it day in and day out. We ran in class I (as between H and J) stock and were running faster times than eveything except A, B and a few C class cars. Sorry for the trip down memory lane. I'll be quiet now!
