Just bought a 99' 4X4 5.4L XLT with 76K and this weekend I'm doing the complete tune-up.
1. Motor oil & filter - plan on using Valvoline (high mileage) oil & Mobil1 filter.
2. Tranny fluid & filter - don't know fluid type & over the counter filter/gasket kit
3. Front/Rear diff - need to check the tag/door sticker to see if I need the modifier
4. Transfer case - no idea
5. Air filter - K&N drop-in
6. Spark plugs & coil boots - what is the recommended model# from ford?
What am I forgetting? Any tips? Any thing else I should do, or any fluid brand/weight recommendations?
I already have the special spark plug socket.
I'm positive you only need the friction modifier in the rear diff. I just did the front diff and transfer case on the weekend. Used 75W - 90 synthetic in the front diff. and MERCON synthetic in the tranfer case. Both are really easy to change. I just bought 2 cheap siphon hand pumps to pump the new fluid. The front diff fluid took a bit because it is thicker than the MERCON fliud. No surprises.

I like Valvoline oil and Motorcraft filters.

Mercon. Filter kits vary in price. When I did mine, the one I purchased was made in Germany and cost ~$30....I've seen others for a lot less.

The front is 75/90 and the rear is 75/140. Put the modifier in if you have a LS differential....rear only.
4. Transfer case - no idea
Mercon
5. Air filter - K&N drop-in
I go back and forth between a K&N and paper...no good reasons why, but I do.
6. Spark plugs & coil boots - what is the recommended model# from ford?
Motorcraft....get them from Ford.
What am I forgetting?
I'd certainly replace the fuel filter and pcv valve too. Also might consider flushing the cooling system and cleaning the MAF sensor and TB.
Is Mobil1 synthetic ok for the front & rear?
What Mercon? IV or V
Any body know if the coil boots from autozone or discount are good, or is only ford recommended? What's the cost?
First full tank my wife got 264 miles. Untill the gas light came on. I thought that the 99' had a 30 gallon tank? When I filled it up, I was only able to stuff 26 gallons back in. Does the light come on with 4 gallons to spare or was I mis-informed on the capacity of the tank? The wife was a little disappointed to say the least with gas mileage. We traded a 98' rodeo that got the same mileage a tank, but only had a 16.5 gallon tank. I was wishing for a little closer to 13 MPG in the city .. We'll see after the tune-up, and computer reset
i don't think mobil one makes gear oil so the answer is no use mercon iv it is the newer mercon and is better use a good gear oil if you use royal purple or lucas there is no need to add friction modifier in the diff's
Mercon and only Mercon....no #'s after Mercon regardless of what anybody else ever tells you. Do a forum search of "mercon" and "mercon V" and you'll see that dealerships were even using the wrong fluids. Take a look at your tranny dipstick...it should be labeled.
The 4x4's have 30 gallon tanks. My light comes on with 5 gallons left in the tank. I can get 16 mpg on the highway with 3" oversize tires, but only with a tuner program installed.
RE: need for friction modifier / confirm if LS diff
Look at the vehicle certification sticker found on the driver's door. Below the bar code are several fields of info including the code for the axle ratio and presence of a limited slip diff. Look directly under the word "AXLE" for a two-digit code. If the two digits are numbers, e.g.:"19", the truck is equipped with an open rear differential and no friction modifier is required. If the digits are alphanumeric, e.g.:"H9", the rear differential is limited slip and requires the modifier. In either example, the second digit denotes the axle ratio. Your truck may have a different second digit than described above.
Good luck on the gas mileage. The computer in my 00 EB 4x$ shows 11.3 MPG when I am driving on city streets. If I put even 50 miles of highway driving (even through town) it goes up to 11.5 or 11.6. Given enough time without highway driving it will drift into the 9 - 10 MPG range. Needless to say, I get on it pretty hard, but not too hard.
Excellant, just remember to use anti-seize on the threads and take the time to use a torque wrench, with aluminum heads you will be glad you did. Also you may want to pick up some orings for the injectors as the rail on the passenger side has to be moved out of the way, no big deal, 2 torx bit screws and off it goes.
