Just returned from a trip hauling 10K 5th wheel at 62mph highway was fairly flat not to many hills 9mpg. I get 15mpg in city and the truck is stock. 04 cc 4x4 3.73.
SBV45 Please keep us informed on your milage with the new flash.
Let me add that I have 7500 Miles and the 5th wheel is 13 feet in height.
I get 18-20 mpg when empty or hauling just a load in the bed of the truck. Towing my 5th wheel that is over 12' high and 11,500 lbs I get between 11-12 mpg and that is between 65-75 mph. My '04 Lariat Crew Cab, 4x4, short bed, was built in Jan '04. Have to like a truck that provides all the power and comfort that this one does and "plain" stock.
Press the two buttons momemtarily while in the "MPG" viewing mode - and it resets - and starts calculating the mileage with a new amont used base. So initially it reads almost instantainious mileage - then as the miles and fuel burned increases in its memory - it gives you a better average. I usually "reset" mine - with every fillup.

It seems IMO using the tow/haul while towing on the highway adversely affects the mpg- I only use it when towing in town or to start out on the highway... I have no need to engage the tow/haul pulling my 7,400 lb boat even when climbing mountain passes as long as I maintain highway speeds of 60-70 mph averaging 11.5-13 mpg.
For example: If I ran burly/aggressive tires with the tow/haul engaged and pulled in excess of 70 mph (a lot of folks do) my mpg would stink!

I too believe this to be true. I only use the Tow/Haul when going down hill, I just love the way the torqshift tran howls as it is slowing me down. And as for going up hill or drive on the freeway I never use it because just as you said it would affect MPG.
i have tried it both ways and the mpg's don't change, i do feel much more safer with tow haul mode on especially on single lane roads coming down the mountains, it is just amazing how the tranny works so well

I have surge brakes on my trailer- Therefore, I shouldn't use the tow/haul when going down the passes while towing as I could potentially burn-up the surge brakes. I do use it unloaded going down the passes with great success.

YES it does. I never use it running down the road...only climb and slowing
I have a 4x4 as well. I have the stock Pirelli STR Scorpion 265/75 R16s. I keep the front tires at 55psi and rear at 65 psi. I have a shell on the bed. See it: http://home.austin.rr.com/sbv1/
I also have a 2000 lb bay boat*(Alumacraft 18' center console with 90hp Johnson) that I pull and typically get 14-15 combined using the Predator 65HP mode before the latest flash.
I average 14.3 mixed and my 4x4 crew only has 3500 miles on it.
Just to put things in perspective. I have been on a work project for the past month and am driving a rented 04 Ram 1500 4x4 crew w/ 4.7L V8. The thing has averaged 11-12 around town and off road and 14.1 on the freeway.
I really feel better about my new purchase after some windshield time in this thing. The interior is more plastic than my lariat HD and the mirrors leave a lot to be desired (Ford has nailed this one!). The truck can't stay in overdrive over hills like the diesel and feels like it is about to drop a tranny at 75mph w/ a minor headwind (had to use tow/haul to keep it in 3rd). It is WAY to low slung for the terrain I have had it on and the suspension is to soft.
I do like the stereo and I used it today to pull a 95 F-250 4x4 mine truck out of a ditch today. Stuck pretty bad. That mine truck has never been driven on pavement and has 33,000 of the hardest miles on earth on the ODO.
