Brake Job

I'm going to be doing a rear brake job on my 1999 ford 4x4 superduty. My question is , is there anything I should know before I start? I've done alot of brakes and i'm just curious. Do the calipers collapse with a c-clamp like most others? Anti lock brakes? I appreciate any help, This site has been a great help and lots of information. Thanks

These brakes will be easy, too. C-clamps work great for collapsing the pistons. Torque wrench, piston lube, and anti-squeal glue are about all you'll need. Maybe a double jack or mallet if you are changing the rotors, also. They tend to stick to the hubs. Anti-locks don't affect anything unless you bleed, bubbles can get stuck in there if you aren't careful. Make certain you torque the lugs up in small incriments to avoid warping the rotors. Have fun!

Just make sure that you vacuum bleed your brakes so you don't mess up your ABS. When I turned the rotors on my '00, my shop teacher made me vacuum bleed, and wouldn't let me leave the shop without doing so. Just my $0.02, and good luck with everything.

If you don't remove the caliper or open the system at all... you don't need to bleed.

Welp... "technically" you can damage the ABS actuator by pressing the pistons back in without opening the bleed screw on the back of the caliper. Does it happen often? Nope. Has it ever happened to me? Nope... but it can happen and I've heard from other techs who have run into it.

Easy fix though.... just before you press the piston in, crack the bled screw slightly and allow the old fluid to bleed out as you press the piston in. Use a C-clamp so that you can keep pressure on the piston once you're done collapsing it. Now just snug up the bleeder again and your golden. You should get no air into the system this way, have no chance to hurt your ABS system, and get the old crappy fluid out from behind the piston as well.
