05 brake job. Sticking brakes.

Howdy fellas. The 05 is needing a brake job now all around and I'm considering doing it myself. However I have a rear brake on the drivers side that sticks. A lot.. I've never done brakes on this one myself but I understand the basics. Never bled brakes either.

So, what are you guys running for "upgraded" brakes and how can I go about solving the sticking for my truck?

Also the brake fluid is the original 194,xxx mile brake fluid so I thinking its time to flush.

The sticking brake is a bad caliper, either because the piston inside of it is hanging up, or because it's leaking fluid. If you find you have to change one side you should change both sides to maintain even braking.

Yeah. I'm gonna put new everything so they all wear the same. I'm looking for a little more stopping power this time though as I may be adding a few turbos to this truck sometime in the future.

I know you said sticks "a lot" - but FYI - I have sometimes found a frount brake on my '00 XP that felt "sticky" and running warm - hard to turn the wheel by hand with it lifted. I found that the culprit was in fact the pads sticking on the sliders. I mean, really stuck. Sure, the hydraulics of the caliper could press them in to stop, but then they would stick there, coming off the rotor only as much as sheer force pushed them.

I'm not a mechanic and the advise above is probably right, but I had an '02 Explorer that had rear driver brake sticking and it was the emergency brake. Dealer fixed it, so I don't know what was involved, but just wanted to point out another potential cause before you go out and buy calipers.

Good thought but keep in mind that with these vehicles the e-brake uses a completely separate set shoes and has nothing to do with the regular braking system, calipers, or pads. I don't know if the explorer is like this or not.

I understand that. It was still the cause of my driver rear brake sticking. The e brake is a drum style brake on inside of rotor. I only mentioned because it may not be problem with normal caliper.
