About 3-4 weeks ago I had Ad-Aware lock up on me when trying to update it. So I ran it without updating it and it locked up again. I figured it was corrupted so I deleted the program and then went to Lavasoft's website and re-downloaded it. As a side benefit I got the new version. Anyways, I updated the new version and when I scanned it found new several spyware items. I normally don't even pick them up thanks to Norton Internet Security ($40 per year) and setting my browser to BLOCK THIRD PARTY COOKIES!
i recently had some things that adware wouldnt remove. i even downloaded the updates and still couldnt get the stuff off. finally went and downloaded the newest version of adware and reinstalled it. that did the trick. removed everything and worked great. hope this helps. good luck!!!
If Firefox gets popular enough they'll figure a way to hack it as well. I use AdAware SE Pro, AVG antivirus, and ZoneAlarm firewall. The newest AdAware SE runs a little slow on this old PC but it cleans out everything including browser hijackers I got a few times. It's never hung on me. I'm running a clone PC I put together a few years ago.
A friend of mine who is really into computers tells me that he's found that these brand name PC's like HP,Dell,Compaq and such use a proprietary bios and don't particularly care for software that is not co-authored by them. If your running one of the above, you might need to get in touch with the company to see if that software is compatible with your PC.
Well I have CWShredder.. works great for the browser hijacks. I already had Mozilla Firefox, but as of about 20 seconds ago uninstalled Internet Explorer. I suppose I will just re-download Adaware and see if it works. I like the great freeware they have these days.. AVG is the best virus scan I have come across in a long time, and i have several programs that I found on the Kim Komando website www.komando.com. If Ad-Aware still doesn't work, other than SpyBot and CWShredder, what are good *FREE* spyware removers?
As far as the junk on my computer, I remember seeing "cydoor".... mostly adware I think.
So I thought I uninstalled INternet explorer, but apparently not. My computer doesn't even have the option of uninstalling IE6... anyone know what to do? ALso, redownloaded Ad-aware and it still doesn't want to work.. oh well I suppose I'll have to live with my 252 pieces of spyware...
As superspike and night_owl said, AVG is a good program, in fact, it was recently rated the #1 antivirus program available to the general public today (free or otherwise), even better than norton or some of the other ones you have to $pay$ for... do yourself (and your computer!) a favor and get AVG! Also as rocky J said, set your browser to medium or medium high privacy to block third party cookies. My input for what its worth..

Reason: typo
The next best program I use is PopUpCop It does a lot more then block popups. It has a whole list of things you can turn on or off while your on the net and one is to block those cookies.
I got a cheao quick solution to removing your spyware. Works well too for removing items but is kind of tough to use the machine again afterwards. it's called a big damn sledgehammer and I got about four of them in the barage, if you need one send a PM with address and I'll loan it to you. LOL
If that doesn't work I've got a bunch of other tools called firearms that work well too for most problems, ie cats, coyotes, crows, starlings, pigeons, and other critters.
You could alwasy place a large magent near you computer. Heard that erases everything well.

It's not as easy to hack Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox as ANY Microsoft product - there's just no comparison - also, ActiveX controls are the worst - and while it's a pain that the Mozilla line of browsers (Firefox is just a rebranded Mozilla, looks like) don't support ActiveX, that's one of the biggest reasons other browsers are safer.
Again, it's not impossible, but it's much harder to bypass other browsers.
Don't get caught up in the propaganda that MS products are hacked so much because "they are more popular". UNIX, Linux, Macintosh, everything has been hacked, virii'd, trojan'd or malware'd. It's just a plain fact that MS products are SO much easier to hack. Too many young, naive, under-paid college-grads working on Windows code, me-thinks
