Power Steering

Developed a leak in my power steering. The truck is an "87". I think is leaking from the pressure hose at or near the steering box. Is it possible to replace the hose without removing the pump?

If I remember right the fittings are sealed with an O-ring not compression like you may expect. The o-ring goes on the end of the line then you insert the line and tighten the fitting nut. You may just need to replace the oring.

Can I just pick up O rings at the hardware store or do I need to be concerned that the power stering fluid will eat the up?

With a caliper you can measure the tube just above the fitting and get the line size.
That measurement would be the inside ID of the O ring you need.
From memory the O ring thickness is about 1/8".

I think I have an old power steering line up at the garage, I will walk up and see if I can find it.

When I replace mine, I found this at Carquest. I only had 1 side on my high pressure side that needed it. they were small nylon washers that could not be replace with a rubber o-ring.

part #82540 from carquest.

That is not the style of hose I have, and I don't know where the old ones I kept as spares went.
