1996 Ford F-250 4WD Autotrans/dual tanks, 460 V8... Gas mileage is bad enough with front tank, but back tank seems to have a drain in it? No visible leaks running on back tank but some smell of gasoline at stop signs.
On my '89 I run the front tank and then the rear, the rear tank goes empty faster then the front, I think the tank slector valve may be bad because while using the rear tank the front tank fills with gas. I have not had time to look into this problem because I don't drive the truck that much with the way gas prices are now.
F150'89 - yes you have a bad selector valve. Unfortunately its a dealer only item.
Dan, if you are smelling gas you have a leak somewhere letting out gas and/or vapor.
Leaks are sometimes hard to find if they are small as gas evaporates faily quickly. for example, my front tank leaks but I only see it on the ground when I park on a hill and it can run off
Check the fuel return where it comes off the top of the engine and goes down the firewall. Mine had come it contact with the EGR pipe and had burned a hole in it. I found it befor I caught fire When I repaired the line I was able to reroute 3" away from the pipe.
My rear tank was pumping into the front tank in about an hours time. If the front tank is full these's no place for the rear tank fuel to go,it sometimes over flows. Also it can build up pressure be very carefull when opening your front gas cap! I think these a recall for this called "Fuel cross flow" is so they will add a new check valve and a new fuel pressure regulalor. Try alldata.com for recall info. and/ or call ford service department with your vin number. Do a Advance Search above for this problem there's a lot of people that had this problem. Leave it on front tank for now on.
I just recently bought a '92 f-150 for wroking around the house and the other day after driving to and from my local hardware store I noticed the smell of gasoline in the air and it was from the back tank. I put a bucket under the cap and after opening the cap about two to three gallons came pouring out. I got underneath to inspect and noticed that my front tank was empty (hollow sound) and my rear tank had all the fuel. I went to the alldata web site and found a safety recall for my model truck. Now, the question I have is where do I go from here?? Do I just stroll into the dealership and ask them to fix it or is there a process I need to go thru. I work nights and and only have about two hours every morning before I go to sleep to make phone calls so any help in cutting some unecessary corner would be greatly appreciated

You should call ford service dept. with your vin number and tell them what's its doing and if they think its cross flow problem. You may of missed the recall 12 years??
go to the top of this page and find the search option under the red pickup picture. Then chick on SEARCH the then click on ADVANCE SEARCH then enter your topic you need under KEY WORD "Fuel cross flow" then find forums on the bottom right list 87 to 96 trucks then SEARCH NOW at the bottom. Make sense? It took me a while to to figure it out to. Its great! Also try FORUMS on the upper right you can find all topics, like just your truck size engine, or workshop tools, or best weekly trucks with pictures.

No, no, no...don't do the advanced search....click on the "RECALLS/TSB'S" link on the upper right of this page. The crossflow problem had an extenstion on the coverage to 12years/150,000 miles from the delivery date. You may have to "argue" a little with your dealer to get it fixed, but they should do it for free. If you're outside the coverage limit, it's about a $250-$300 repair, depending on your dealer's labor rate.
