My fingers hurt.

Well, I just picked up my guitar again after having it sit in the corner for about the last 5 years. And I must say it is not like riding a bike. It is amazing just how much stuff a person can forget. So I decided to start off easy, you know something simple. So in my infinate wisdom I tried a little Joe Satriani. My God I sound horrible. But I kept at it, and now it hurts to type.

I've always wanted to learn the guitar but never had the patience. But my brother who plays the bass like nobody's business can't work on his own car so I guess we all have our "thing".

mjwhip2, keep it up dude! although starting out with satch is pretty daunting, at least you have good taste. i think that the rhythm guitar part on surfing with the alien is a great workout. try to play it all the way through along with the song.
one more thing. and this is VERY important. ALWAYS warm up your hands before playing. you will play better and avoid injury. here's the warm up that i do. run some hot water (not too hot!) in the sink. wash your hands and as you do so, massage all the little muscles in your fingers, hands and wrists. it should take about two to three minutes. dry your hands, continuing the massaging. now take hold of a fingertip with your other hand. shake each finger like this but dont hurt yourself. now put your arms at your sides and throw your hands at the floor as if you were shaking water off of them. cracking your knuckles wont hurt you but dont force anything; if it needs to crack, it will.
your guitar will thank you for playing it with such clean hands!
keep on rockin'!!!!

I bought a new Fender this spring. I haven't played git-fiddle in more than 20 years. The neck on this one is narrower than my first, very old, guitar. So..I sound like I'm trying to play a snare drum, with all the buzzing I get. I should trade it in for a more classical one. And sore fingers....UFDAH!

has that fender been set up properly? if the neck is out of adjustment and the intonation is wrong, it will be very hard to play cleanly. put a capo on the 1st fret, and hold down the low E string at the 21st fret. you should be able to just barely slide a playing card under the string at the 8th fret.
